Description
The Sweet Banana Pepper plant (also known as the yellow wax pepper or banana chili) is a medium-sized member of the chili pepper family that has a mild, tangy taste. While the peppers are typically bright yellow, it is possible for them to change to red or orange as they ripen, though they retain their sweet mild flavor. This versatile pepper can be used fresh as a sweet tangy addition to many foods and relishes, or it can be cooked, fried or pickled and used as a condiment. The mature peppers are about 5-6 inches long and have a curved shape and yellow color similar to a banana, giving rise to the fruit’s common name. Banana peppers are said to be an optimum food for inclusion in weight loss diets, as they contain low amounts of calories, fat, and sodium. In addition they are also a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, potassium and a very good source of vitamin C. Plant the peppers in a full sun location 18-24 inches apart. Peppers require a rich well-draining soil, and mulching to preserve the soil moisture. Adding a layer of mulch around the pepper plants’ root systems controls weeds and prevents moisture loss from the soil. Water the base of the plants to avoid splashing water on leaves, fruit or blossoms, which can spread problems. These plants can grow 18-24 inches tall; they are also good to grow in larger containers. Plants fruit prolifically, easily producing 25 to 30 pods per plant, with an early maturity in 75 days (from seeding)..
